Outcome Measures & the Curious Case of CLIPPERS

CLIPPERS – chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids – is an only recently defined condition, with serious neurological consequences in many cases.

As such, there is really no herbal precedent for managing this complex and interesting condition, nor is there much known about the optimal conventional medical treatment or the long term prognosis.

Managing a patient with a condition of this nature, and especially evaluating the efficacy of herbal and naturopathic treatment, poses significant challenges. This is where the use of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROM’s) can be exceedingly valuable.

In this presentation Ian will discuss the case history of a patient with CLIPPERS, review the known pathophysiology and clinical manifestations, and show how PROM’s can assist in measuring the effectiveness of treatment.

Presented by Ian Breakspear

Ian Breakspear has been a herbalist and naturopath for 24 years, and an educator for 20 years, including 10 years in academic management and course design at universities and private colleges. In his practice in Sydney, Ian specialises in helping people with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and complex and unusual conditions. Ian also delivers postgraduate lectures nationally and internationally, and sits on various educational standards and journal peer-review committees. For 8 years Ian was on the NHAA Board, as an Examiner, Executive Director and finally Vice-President, and was awarded Fellowship of the NHAA in 2006.
