Board Members
The Board of Directors is a group of dedicated, passionate and unpaid volunteers who want to give something back to the profession. But first and foremost they are herbalists and naturopaths elected by the NHAA full membership to serve for a term of two years.
Here are the people who work for your Association.
Claudia Joy Wingo (Examiner)
Claudia Joy Wingo is a practicing Medical Herbalist, Naturalist,
RN, Educator and has been an Examiner on the Board of the NHAA since 2009. Currently undertaking a Master in Public Health and
Tropical Medicine at James
Cook University,
she has always had a passion for both the science and art of plants and
medicine.
Now running a herbal practice in Concord, Claudia returned last year from living in the USA where she was Clinical Chair and Director of the Student Clinic in a Master of Science in Herbal Medicine degree program at TAI Sophia Institute and adjunct faculty at University of Maryland’s Complementary and Alternative Medicine program. In addition, she was instrumental in the opening of Lifepath, an integrative medical practice as a RN, Medical Herbalist and Nutritional Consultant on the outskirts of Washington DC. While there, Claudia completed Naturalist Certification at the USDA Graduate School with a major in Natural History and Ecology. She has a keen interest in environmental health and is on the executive board of the Rachel Carson Council.
Dedicated to the practice of herbal medicine and its integration into Australian medical care, Claudia is excited about her role at NHAA and the health system as a whole.
Claudia’s long time interest in edible plants and herbalism was sparked by both her grandmother, a herbalist in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri and her botanist father.
After completing her Chef’s apprenticeship in the US and Europe, she traveled to the Middle East to apprentice with a Yemenite herbalist in Israel and then on to Australia where she began formalised study and received Diplomas in Botanical Medicine, Nutrition and Therapeutic Body Work in 1980. She became an RN in 1984 after nursing training at Children’s Hospital in Camperdown. She went on to work as an RN at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and in Guatemala and Costa Rica on a TB vaccination program for DSF. She completed a Bachelor of Applied Science, Nursing at the University of Sydney in 1994 with a major in Mental Health.
A lifelong traveler, Claudia continues to indulge her love of slow food, good wine, groovy music, long botanical walks, scuba diving and the occasional (herbal) martini both here and abroad with her musician husband.

Linda Bates (Executive Director)
Linda Bates formalised her qualifications in Herbal Medicine
by studying first with Denis Stewart and then attending classes with Dorothy
Hall at her College in Rozelle, graduating in 1986. She has been a private
consultant Herbalist and Nutritionist since then. Between 1992 and 2002 she
lived in the upper Blue Mountains, growing her own medicinal herbs organically
and manufacturing fresh plant tinctures, oils and healing creams for her
clients. Here she began teaching groups of people how to understand their
bodies and how use fresh plants to heal themselves.
Linda still uses traditional methods to manufacture much of her dispensary from fresh herbs grown in the mountains in a bio-dynamic garden or wildcrafted.
Growing up in England with a great grandmother who was a Herbalist, Linda learned the traditional arts of manufacturing and mixing and healing with herbs from her mother and grandmother. Her greatest passion is to teach groups of people these creative arts and to keep this knowledge alive.
For four years between 2002 and 2005 Linda taught Manufacturing and Herbal Medicine (Therapeutics) at Nature Care College, Australasian College of Natural Therapies and the NSW College of Natural Medicine. Now she mentors new practitioners and teaches privately to groups and individuals. She also runs a busy clinic in Queens Park, Sydney where she has help from 1 or 2 apprentices.
Currently she is travelling back and forth to Findhorn, in the far north of Scotland, developing her shamanic skills with Franco Santoro and designing classes to teach in the Findhorn garden.

Charles Sturt University in 2003 and now teaches and practices in Newcastle.

When time permits Elizabeth loves to travel, read, play guitar (badly), and indulge her enthusiasm for good coffee and chocolate.
