Herb Growers - for those involved in herb production

Herb Growers is a new category of Companion membership of the NHAA, and is open to individuals and companies involved in the herb growing industry.

The NHAA recognises the great importance of  locally Australian grown herbs, particularly in regards to issues such as environmental sustainability, local jobs and local production of raw herb material to be used for medicinal purposes. We also acknowledge that many herb growers wish to be part of a professional herbal medicine organisation without themselves being clinicians.

With the increasing popularity of herbal medicine in Australia and internationally the NHAA would like to emphasise its commitment to the herb growing industry in Australia to build stronger bonds between growers and clinicians. The construction of this specific category of companion membership  is a further attempt by the NHAA to more fully incorporate herb growers into our profession and help to enhance the knowledge and practice of herb growing within our membership. One of our major aims in this development is to promote Australian herb growers to the membership and therefore to increase the economic viability of locally grown medicinal herbs.

Please note that as a herb grower, companion member you are not entitled to use the Association’s name or initials in any form, or in any way imply that you are a practitioner member of the NHAA.

How to Apply

How you apply for full membership depends on whether the course you completed was accredited with us, and how recently you graduated.

Step 2:

  • If your course is (or was) accredited, you are eligible to join through our Clause 1 category.
  • If your course is (or was) not accredited, you can apply through our Clause 2 category.

If you are unsure, please contact the office

Applying via Clause 1

Clause 1 is for those who have completed an NHAA accredited course. This means the course has been pre-approved to meet our education and training standards and graduates are automatically eligible for full membership.

Clause 1 applications are normally processed within a week of us receiving the required paperwork.

  • Print the membership form and fill out the full member sections on pages 1, 2 and 3.
  • Attach certified copies of your qualifications. If you do not yet have your qualification document/s, you can send copies of your transcripts (these must clearly indicate that you have graduated), or a letter from your school stating that you have graduated. NB: All copies must be certified and we cannot process your membership until we receive these.
  • Attach evidence of your enrollment date to verify that you were enrolled in an accredited course. This is most often indicated on your transcripts but could be an enrollment receipt etc.
  • If you wish to join as a practicing full member, attach copies of your insurance and first aid. Please read our insurance and first aid information for minimum requirements. NB: You can forward this information later if you do not have it yet.

  • If your qualification is more than a year old, attach evidence of a minimum of 50 points of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) acquired in the last 12 months. Our CPE page will explain how to do this. NB: You must include both the CPE diary sheet and evidence of what you have recorded on it.
  • Fill out the payment section of the membership form on page 4. NB: See our membership rates page for amounts as some specials are available and we have pro-rata rates for those joining part way through the year.

  • Post your membership form and documents to the NHAA. Remember, we must have the original certified copies of your documents, so faxed or scanned copies are not acceptable.

Applying via Clause 2

Clause 2 is for those who have not completed an NHAA accredited course. Because we do not know the course content or level of clinical experience, we need more information from you to determine your eligibility for full membership.

In processing a Clause 2 application, our examiners cross-check your individual course subjects and hours against our education standards. They also take into consideration any other training and clinical experience. Thus the process can take between 1-3 weeks, depending on the level of information you supply. Once you submit your paperwork, you will be contacted by one of our examiners who will keep you up to date with progress and let you know if there is anything else they need.

  • Print out the membership form and fill out the full member sections on page 1, 2 and 3.
  • Attach certified copies of the documents listed in the Clause 2 evidence guide. If you fall into category 2, you will also need to include evidence of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) - our CPE page will explain how to do this (you must include both the CPE diary sheet and evidence of what you have recorded on it).  NB: All copies must be certified and we cannot process your membership until we receive these.
  • If you wish to join as a practicing full member, attach copies of your insurance and first aid. Please read our insurance and first aid information for minimum requirements. NB: You can forward this information later if you do not have it yet.

  • Fill out the payment section of the membership form on page 4. NB: Clause 2 applications incur an extra $65 processing fee. Please enclose this fee with your application. Membership fees can be paid once your application is finalised. See our membership rates page for amounts as some specials are available and we have pro-rata rates for those joining part way through the year.

  • Post your membership form and documents to the NHAA. Remember, we must have the original certified copies of your documents, so faxed or scanned copies are not acceptable.
