Federal budget bonuses for small business

Small business was highlighted in the recent federal budget, with a couple of points that may be of particular interest:

  • Unincorporated businesses such as sole traders and partnerships with annual turnover up to $2 million will get a 5% tax discount (capped at $1000) through their year-end tax returns from 1 July, 2015
  • Small businesses with a turnover up to $2 million get an immediate tax deduction for any individual assets they buy costing less than $20,000 (currently the threshold sits at $1000). This $20,000 limit applies to each individual item and small businesses can apply this rule to as many individual items as they wish. This starts from Budget night and runs until the end of June 2017

National Code of Conduct to be implemented

A recent meeting of the Federal, State and Territory Health Ministers considered the final report A National Code of Conduct for health care workers and the results of a national consultation on standards of conduct for all health care workers who are not registered under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme for health practitioners. This includes naturopaths and western herbal medicine practitioners.

The Health Ministers agreed to the terms of the first National Code of Conduct for health care workers. This Code, once implemented, will set standards of conduct and practice for all unregistered health care workers. Ministers agreed that jurisdictions would now examine the implementation of the National Code and code-regulation regime. For more details see http://www.coaghealthcouncil.gov.au/Announcements

Teach out period extended for Advanced Diplomas

The NHAA has been lobbying the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) to extend the teach out period for the Advanced Diplomas due to be phased out next year. From the beginning of 2016, the Advanced Diplomas of naturopathy, Western herbal medicine, homeopathy and nutrition will be removed from the health training package, with the new standard being a Bachelor degree.

A teach out period was available for those currently studying Advanced Diplomas, however the NHAA has been lobbying to extend this period in order to make it fairer for those students and their colleges. The ASQA Commissioners yesterday approved that the teach out period be extended to 31 December 2018. For more information see the ASQA website. Find out more about the change to Degree.
