While prevention is core to the work we do, it’s only recently found its way into Australia’s national healthcare agenda via the National Preventative Health Strategy (NPHS). This is an exciting development for naturopaths and herbalists as it may provide a new angle for us to communicate our value and contribution as community healthcare providers. For this reason, the NHAA recently sponsored research to be conducted at the University of Technology Sydney by Associate Professor Amie Steel.
This research investigates our own clinical preventative health strategies with our patients across the spectrum of topics covered by the National Preventative Health Strategy.
In the webinar, Amie will introduce the National Preventative Health Strategy and show how it will drive Australia’s national healthcare agenda. She will overview what research has already uncovered about our role in preventive health in Australia and around the world. She will also highlight some ways clinicians can contribute to the new research project sponsored by NHAA.

ABOUT DR AMIE STEEL
Dr Amie Steel is an Associate Professor within the discipline of Public Health, Co-Director of the Australian Research Collaborative in Complementary and Integrative Medicine (University of Technology Sydney), and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow. Amie has attracted ~$4.4M in research funding in the last 4 years and holds editorial appointments in leading complementary medicine academic journals. She has authored over 220 journal articles, contributed to over 30 book chapters, and edited three special journal issues – most recently on Global Public Health and Traditional Medicine – and three research books such as the world’s first health technology assessment of naturopathy. She has leadership roles within the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) and the World Naturopathic Federation (WNF). She is a global leader in naturopathy and complementary medicine research.

With an increase in the naturopathic treatments in Australia, especially among individuals grappling with chronic conditions, there exists a need to address barriers hindering broader accessibility to naturopathic care. Drawing inspiration from the success of Group Medical Visits (GMVs) or Integrative Group Medical Visits (IGMVs) in conventional medical practices globally, naturopaths in Australia are increasingly exploring the implementation of group naturopathic consultations. GMVs have demonstrated efficacy in managing chronic diseases, enhancing health outcomes, and fostering collective care by integrating connection and peer support with clinical expertise.

Hannah is a Naturopath and Herbalist based on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. Hannah loves being a generalist practitioner and sees a variety of different patients, but her clinical areas of interest include mental health, hormone health and fertility. ABOUT SOPHIA GERONTAKOS
Sophia is a naturopath and massage therapist, research assistant at the Sydney Adventist Hospital, and clinician at Blue Mountains Women’s Health Centre. Sophia is also a trained shared medical appointment group facilitator and works with clinical naturopaths providing guidance and group facilitation services to assist with implementing group visits within their clinics. In addition to her professional roles, Sophia is working on the final stages of a PhD (Southern Cross University) investigating a new model of delivering naturopathic care to women and gender-diverse people with endometriosis using group visits, to address unmet healthcare needs and issues of access and integration of naturopathy. Sophia also serves on the board of directors of the NHAA since late 2023.

Topic: An Immune-modulating Approach to Endometriosis

Endometriosis is an inflammatory disease that is affected by estrogen but is not caused by estrogen. In this 1-hour webinar, experienced naturopath Lara Briden will examine the paradigm shift currently underway with this complex disease. Specifically, she’ll take you through some of the latest research around endometriosis as a disease of immune dysfunction and the growing evidence for the involvement of macrophages, mast cells,

Topic: Pathology for Naturopaths & Herbalists
Pathology comes in many forms from traditional pathology tests to functional medicine testing. Naturopaths and herbalists do have the option of being able to order, understand and use these tests not only for diagnostic purposes, but for assessing the ‘terrain’ of the body. This means identifying possible illnesses or imbalances that can affect a person’s optimal health and wellbeing. In addition, a majority of the pathology testing can also be for prevention rather than treatment purposes. The following webinar will be focusing on a variety of pathology tests that naturopaths and herbalist can conduct to assist certain conditions and diseases as well as prevention strategies.

Topic: Keynotes from the COVID 19 Chapter in our Thyroid Biography
While there’s nothing new about the potential for viral driven thyroid disturbance, both acutely during infection and chronically, following ‘recovery’, what is new and making news in the aftermath of the Covid 19 pandemic is the particular predilection this virus has shown for this gland. Thanks to its naturally high expression of ACE2 receptors (far more than seen in the lungs for example) the potential impacts, covering a wide spectrum of thyroid dysfunction & disease, have been observed and documented. This ranges from unprecedented rates of Euthyroid Sick Syndrome & Thyrotoxicosis during the acute phase to either activation (in an individual with a personal hx) or provocation (no previous hx or diagnosis) of autoimmune thyroid conditions as a result of either the infection or vaccination. Although there will be more research to come that will help us clarify and confirm some of this detail, the data already in existence is undeniable and warrants our attention.

Topic: Herbal Medicine and the Gastrointestinal Microbiota – Herbs that nurture and herbs that kill.
Research demonstrating the vital importance of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) microbiota to human health has been growing exponentially over the past two decades. Investigations have also been finding that an altered GIT ecosystem (i.e., dysbiosis) is involved in the pathogenesis of a number of different disease states – from depression, autism, and metabolic syndrome, to Alzheimer’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and even hypertension. Recent studies have also highlighted that many herbal medicines have the capacity to alter the composition and functioning of this microbiota. In this presentation, Dr Hawrelak will provide a brief overview of the importance of the GIT microbiota and highlight some of the published research that has assessed the impact of herbal medicines on our GIT microbiome. Herbs that appear to nurture and nourish the microbiota will be highlighted, as well as herbal preparations that can be used to target specific infections or imbalances in the ecosystem, as well as those whose use may result in unwanted collateral damage to this vital human ecosystem.
