Andrographis update: Joint association statement for practitioners

NHAA has joined with fellow professional associations to provide guidance for practitioners following the TGA’s decision to remove Andrographis paniculata as an ingredient permitted for use in new listed medicines.

The decision follows concerns about the risk of severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, which may occur unpredictably – even in people who have previously used the herb without a reaction. The joint statement notes that a safe dose or preparation has not been established and it remains unclear whether the risk differs between forms, including liquid herbal extracts.

The TGA’s decision relates specifically to the listed medicines framework and does not constitute a blanket prohibition on the use of Andrographis paniculata. Other lawful pathways remain available, subject to applicable regulatory requirements.

Practitioners are encouraged to check the regulatory status of individual products, including any recalls, exercise professional judgement and seek advice from their professional indemnity and product liability insurance provider about their cover.

The report reflects the contributions of members and volunteers across the Association, and the work underway to support naturopathy and Western herbal medicine.
